Oigen
Oigen
Oigen Foundry has been producing Nambu ironware in Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture since 1852 — making it one of the oldest ironware manufacturers still in continuous operation in Japan. Over 170 years of production have refined both their technical capabilities and their design sensibility, producing cast iron cookware and teaware that combines deep craft knowledge with a keen awareness of how contemporary kitchens actually work.
Like their neighbours and occasional rivals at Iwachu, Oigen uses traditional sand-casting methods in which individual pieces are cast in single-use molds made from local clay and sand. This process produces the slight surface variations and natural texture that distinguish genuine Nambu ironware from industrially produced alternatives. Each piece is inspected and finished by hand before leaving the foundry, and defects that might pass unnoticed in mass production are caught and corrected at Oigen's workshop.
The range of Oigen products available here focuses on their cast iron frying pans, hotpots and accessories. Their frying pans are pre-seasoned at the foundry, making them ready for immediate use without the initial seasoning process that raw cast iron requires. They heat slowly and evenly, retain that heat exceptionally well and develop a natural non-stick patina over time that improves the longer the pan is used. Their cast iron hotpots are designed for oden, sukiyaki and other slow-cooked Japanese dishes, producing the kind of deep, steady heat that clay and stainless steel cannot replicate.
Choosing Oigen is choosing a direct connection to one of Japan's most enduring craft traditions — and a piece of cookware that will genuinely outlast you.
