Tea Ceremony
The Japanese tea ceremony, chado, the way of tea, is one of the most refined expressions of Japanese aesthetic philosophy. Developed over several centuries from the Zen Buddhist tea rituals introduced from China in the twelfth century, and codified by the master Sen no Rikyu in the sixteenth century, chado is a practice that uses the preparation and serving of matcha as a framework for exploring the principles of harmony, respect, purity and tranquility. Every object used in the ceremony, every bowl, scoop, whisk and caddy, is chosen with intention and contributes to the overall experience of the ritual.
The tools required for a full tea ceremony setup are specific and carry their own history and connoisseurship. The chawan matcha bowl is the central object, it is held, examined and appreciated as part of the ceremony, and the finest examples are collected and passed down through generations. The chasen bamboo whisk, split by hand from a single piece of bamboo, creates the characteristic froth of prepared matcha and should ideally be stored on a chasen holder to preserve the shape of the tines between uses. The chashaku bamboo scoop measures the correct amount of matcha powder into the bowl. The natsume lacquered caddy holds the matcha and is itself an object of beauty and craft.
The collection here brings together all of these tools, chawan, chasen, chasen holder, chashaku, natsume and the fukusa silk cloth used for ritual purification of the implements, in a range of quality levels suited to both newcomers and those with more serious practice. The matcha for ceremony use is available in the green tea section.
Even without full ceremony practice, these tools produce a genuinely superior cup of matcha at home compared to improvised alternatives.
