Sori Yanagi
Sori Yanagi
Sori Yanagi (1915–2011) was one of Japan's most influential industrial designers, and his legacy in the kitchen is as strong today as it was during his most productive decades. Trained in both Western modernist design and Japanese craft traditions, Yanagi developed a philosophy that beauty and function are inseparable, that an object designed to work perfectly will naturally achieve a visual elegance that cannot be reached by aesthetics alone. His kitchen work is the clearest expression of this philosophy.
The Sori Yanagi stainless steel range, which includes mixing bowls, colanders, ladles, turners, tongs and cutlery, is characterised by the gentle, organic curves that became his signature. The handles of his utensils are ergonomically shaped with a subtle downward taper that feels remarkably natural in the hand. The bowls sit at an angle that makes them stable on any work surface while remaining easy to pour from. Every detail has been considered in relation to how the piece will actually be used, and the coherence of this thinking across the whole range is immediately apparent.
The 18-8 stainless steel used across the range is selected for its combination of durability, food safety and the polished finish that Yanagi's designs require. It resists staining, does not react with acidic or salty foods, and can be washed in the dishwasher without degradation. The pieces are made in Japan to Yanagi's original specifications and have not changed in any significant way since they were first produced, because they were right the first time.
Owning a piece of Sori Yanagi cookware is a small but genuine connection to one of the great moments in twentieth-century Japanese design, and it is a connection you encounter every time you cook.
