Coffee & Teaware
Coffee & Teaware
Japan has developed one of the world's most considered cultures around both coffee and tea, and the tools and vessels produced for each drink reflect the seriousness with which both are approached. Japanese green tea culture stretches back to the twelfth century, when Zen Buddhist monks brought tea seeds from China and developed the powdered matcha preparation that forms the basis of the chado tea ceremony. Coffee culture arrived much later but was absorbed with the same intensity, producing a country of specialty coffee enthusiasts, hand-drip obsessives and pour-over practitioners whose attention to extraction variables rivals the care Japanese tea masters bring to their work.
The two cultures have cross-pollinated in interesting ways. The same aesthetic values, simplicity, craft, material integrity, attention to the experience of consumption rather than just the drink itself, run through the best Japanese coffee and teaware. A Hario V60 dripper and a Tokoname kyusu teapot look like they come from the same design conversation, even though one is a product of the twentieth-century specialty coffee movement and the other carries four hundred years of ceramic tradition. The connecting thread is a Japanese sensibility about what makes a functional object beautiful.
This collection covers the tools for both practices. For tea: teapots in cast iron, ceramic and glass; cups in various ceramic traditions; canisters for proper storage; chasen bamboo whisks and chawan bowls for matcha ceremony; and a selection of quality Japanese green teas to fill them. For coffee: ceramic and glass V60 drippers from Hario; hand grinders for fresh grinding; gooseneck kettles for precise pour control; and ceramic coffee cups and mugs that make the ritual of the morning cup feel genuinely special.
